They were the staff of the then South Eastern Agricultural College at Wye. It later became Wye College.

Authority kept the collection in the Old Tithe Burn, Maidstone. They later transferred it to East Malling for safekeeping during World War II.

The County council accepted the offer from Wye College to take over the collection in 1948. Students and members of the college archaeological society took responsibility for the transfer.

They did many things, including setting out and labeling the collection. A driving force at the time was Michael Nightingale.

He was a student with a deep interest in the subject and became in later years famous in Kent. He became famous for his passionate defense of the rural environment.

The authority housed the collection at Coldharbour in the initial stage. The collection increased when the college purchased Court Lodge Farm in 1957.

They were both members of the College staff. It became famous to students of agricultural history in the southeast.

The College realized that it could no longer support it in 1996. They failed to run it in the way necessary for surviving and developing.

They arranged a discussion with interested individuals and formed a charitable Trust. The name of this charitable Trust was the Wye Rural Museum Trust.

They formed under the direction of the same Michael Nightingale. He had been so active in the origins of this project in the 1940s.

Funds came from the Heritage Lottery Fund and many corporate and individual donors. In the spring of 1997, the Trust bought the Barn and associated buildings from the College.
